Saskatchewan has been endowed with a rich variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, wetlands, rivers, and lakes. These habitats support many species of invertebrates, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish species. Often, the majority of fish and wildlife in Saskatchewan are healthy and it is rare to see sick or dying animals. Having said that, diseases and parasites are natural part of an ecosystem. Wildlife disease surveillance in Saskatchewan occurs through collaboration with the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre (www.ccwhc.ca). Most surveillance work depends on public reporting of diseased or dead wildlife.

Diseases You Can Get From Wildlife

Avian influenza viruses (AIV) occur naturally in wild birds, especially waterfowl and can be found globally.

Outbreaks of anthrax have occurred in a number of Rural Municipalities in Saskatchewan.
