The single most significant environmental challenge facing the globe and citizens of the earth is the changes in our climate that are occurring as a result of greenhouse gas emissions. As global citizens, as citizens of Canada and Saskatchewan, we must accept our role in contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, as well as our responsibility to do our part to reduce emissions and address the challenges of climate change.

Saskatchewan and the Australian State of Victoria have become partners in researching and developing low-carbon technologies, renewable energy sources and plans for adapting to climate change with today's signing of an agreement in Copenhagen.

Saskatchewan Environment Minister Nancy Heppner today urged her counterparts from across Canada to unite behind Federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice as critical talks continue in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Environment Minister Nancy Heppner heads to Copenhagen, Denmark tomorrow to represent Saskatchewan's interests at international climate change negotiations during the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP15).

December 1, 2009 - Government Re-Introduces Climate Change Legislation

Today, the Government of Saskatchewan re-introduced its climate change legislation that establishes the framework for how the province will meet its target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent from 2006 levels by 2020 and foster innovation in low-carbon technologies. Read More.

Climate Change Consultations

The Ministry of Environment conducted stakeholder consultations on proposed legislation to regulate greenhouse gas emissions in the province which was introduced in the Spring 2009 session of the provincial legislature. A backgrounder on the scope of these consultations can be found here.

A new round of consultation is set to begin to further develop the regulations for greenhouse gas emissions in the province.

  1. Anti-Idling - The Ministry of Environment has developed a multifaceted vehicle idling awareness program to support and encourage Saskatchewan citizens, businesses and industry to reduce their carbon footprint through conscientious driving habits.

  2. Programs for Individuals and Homeowners / Residential Users - The Government of Saskatchewan offers a number of programs to assist individuals and homeowners/residential users reduce their GHG emissions in their day-to-day lives.

  3. Programs for Businesses / Institutions and Communities - The Government of Saskatchewan offers a number of programs to assist businesses, institutions and communities reduce their GHG emissions in their day-to-day operations.

  4. Recycling - The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to a healthy environment and a sustainable economy. In this section you will find information on recycling programs in Saskatchewan that directly reduce the amount of GHG entering the atmosphere, through recycling and reusing fossil fuel derived products.

  5. Research and Development Projects - The Government of Saskatchewan has made a financial commitment to assist Saskatchewan residents, businesses, and communities explore and implement cost-effective, greener technologies and practices that balance economic and environmental sustainability.
