Airtankers have proven to be very effective in combating forest fires. However, with escalating costs of aircraft and fire retardant, effectiveness alone is not sufficient. Therefore, the operation must be conducted, not only safely and effectively, but efficiently as well.

The formula for successful wildfire control is early detection, coupled with fast and aggressive initial attack. Airtanker objectives on initial attack are:

1. Quick containment.
2. Minimize size.
3. Minimize damage and cost.

The Ministry of Environment has a variety of Airtankers to aid in meeting these objectives.

Aviation Operations manages and maintains 6 Tanker Bases throughout the province.

Air tankers have enjoyed a long and colorful history dating before the Second World War.
